The Beam Room is a venue steeped in history. Our building dates back to 1865, the same year the second battle of Fort Fisher began during the Civil War. Press clips note that a string of dry good stores occupied the space until 1895, when long-term tenant Polvogt & Co. took over the lease. It was during that time when the natural light well was added.
The building burned in a massive fire in 1895 that consumed the entire block. Building owner Samuel Behrends rebuilt and Polvogt & Co. reopened as the largest carpet outlet in the state. Despite being a successful business, Polvogt & Co. closed in 1906. The building was then occupied by another dry goods store, a candy store for the segregated movie theater located across the street and a musical instrument dealer.
In 1931, Foy, Roe & Company, a men’s clothing store and the longest tenant of the building, opened their doors and remained a downtown institution until the early 1980s. The Beam Room was utilized for offices and alterations during that time.
You can still find the original letters from the Foy, Roe & Company building facade in The Beam Room today.
After its run as office space, the building was renovated in 1995 as the iconic pitcher perfect venue. With Front Street Brewery and its full kitchen down below, The Beam Room offers all of the convenience of an event venue and on-site food services.
